Description

Located approximately 70 miles west of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most remote and unique national parks in Florida. Covering nearly 100 square miles, the park is made up mostly of open water and seven small islands in the Gulf of Mexico.

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, Dry Tortugas National Park is best known for its historic Fort Jefferson, crystal-clear turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, abundant marine life, and diverse bird populations. Its isolation has helped preserve the park’s natural beauty, making it a true Florida bucket-list destination.

Getting to Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas is one of the most secluded parks in the entire National Park System. Visitors can reach the park only by:

  • Daily concession ferry

  • Private or charter boat

  • Seaplane

There are no bridges or road access, which adds to the park’s untouched and adventurous appeal.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Dry Tortugas National Park has a subtropical climate, with temperatures typically ranging from 60°F to 90°F throughout the year.

  • Winter (December–March): Cooler, drier weather with stronger winds and rougher seas

  • Summer (June–November): Hot and humid with a higher chance of tropical storms

  • Spring & Fall: Generally considered the best times to visit for calmer seas and comfortable temperatures
